Yesterday, Governor Ige signed Act 153 into law, which will invest $100,000 of state funds into sustaining and expanding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program’s (SNAP) “double-up” programs!

“Double-Up” programs allow and incentivize SNAP recipients to purchase twice as many locally grown fruits and vegetables with their SNAP funds. It’s a win for local farmers who can grow and sell more crops, for participating retailers who can boost sales, and for Hawaii residents who may otherwise be challenged by the costs of purchasing healthy, fresh produce.

As an added bonus, a number of local companies have provided matching funds for a federal matching grant. Paired with state funding, this could result in close to $2 million coming to Hawaii to support SNAP “double-up” programs!

Congratulations to the American Heart Association Hawaii and to all advocates and volunteers who are working to make each day healthier for all children!
